Yeah, great insights.

The liminal power of the suburb comes from the contradiction. It is obviously provisional, almost absurdly modern, and yet—it can feel like a fucking cosmos. A little temporary world that was experienced as eternal in childhood. It's all so very surreal in concept. Art absolutely had to grow out of it. And this is, of course, the birthplace of the Backrooms too, is it not?

It all reminds me of the opening to Blue Velvet. Before the film devolved into typical Lynch kitsch and "and then" craziness, it felt like it was going to reveal the worms—the real worms—the spiritual worms—beneath the tidied lawns of suburban America.
